Ballroom Extravaganza ‘Legendary’ Lands on HBO

The new HBO series Legendary premiered and the nine-part series looks set to fill any RuPaul shaped holes in viewer’s hearts.

But don’t confuse or conflate the two.

While RuPaul’s Drag Race draws inspiration from the ballroom scene, Legendary is an unscripted, competitive reality show that sees members of all races, ages, and genders from established underground ballroom communities team up in houses and compete to achieve “legendary” status and $100,000 cash prize.

When the show was announced in February, HBO promised: “unbelievable balls and showcase sickening fashion”.

This was a promise seemingly fulfilled in the trailer last week which was brimming with the energy of extravagant outfits, a flamboyant cast, and mesmerizing weekly runway themes.

If that wasn’t enticing enough, then the judges were sure to generate a buzz of excitement on social media after it was revealed chart-topping rapper Megan Thee Stallion will grace the judges’ panel. Alongside her will sit her co-judges who are sure to offer an abundance of enigmatic glamor with the likes of Jameela Jamil, Law Roach, and ballroom icon himself, Leiomy Maldonado.

The show not only holds the potential to be the next obsessive foray into a world of glamor but is also a powerful reminder that even in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, we can still find joy by indulging in some voguing.

You can watch the trailer for Legendary and stream the series now, on HBO Max.
