Read What Billie Eilish Had to Say About White Supremacy and Black Lives Matter
As protests in honor of George Floyd continue to happen all over the United States, Billie Eilish decided to use her voice to support Black Lives Matter and criticize the white fragility behind All Lives Matter.
Eilish envisions a world in which everything is different. Like Eilish, we also want to see a world in which there is kindness, equality, and no police brutality. Eilish points out that Black Lives Matter should not be replaced with All Lives Matter because police brutality and discrimination are not aimed at white or white-passing people, and are instead directed at Black Americans.
Whether you like it or not, light skin grants white people automatic privilege in a society where most things serve as a currency, whether it is their appearance, sexual orientation, or religious views. If one is privileged, there has to be someone who is not.
If today we are witnesses of senseless racism and murder in broad daylight, tomorrow there will be bigger and stronger instances of discrimination and racism.
Please stay safe and contribute your voice to everyone’s united action of dismantling institutionalized racism, whether it is through signing a petition, calling, donating, or safely and peacefully protesting while wearing masks because of COVID-19. While Billie Eilish’s voice is powerful, your voice is also essential. Use it to make a change.
I am an incoming junior at the UCLA College of Letters and Science. Through my love and appreciation for literature, social justice, feminism, public speaking, and writing, I am planning on pursuing a career in immigration and public interest law. I want to help those who are either the victims of the system or discrimination because I wholeheartedly believe that the purpose of my life is to help others and take cases that nobody else is willing to take.
