Yesterday, singer-songwriter and former Fifth Harmony member Lauren Jauregui joined the Miami protests in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Since the horrific news of George Floyd’s murder at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis earlier this week, individuals have been both engaging in protests and otherwise demonstrating active support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Even prior to the news of Floyd’s senseless murder, the “Expectations” singer has been active in her fight against injustice and inequality. As a bisexual Cuban-American, Jauregui has clearly reflected upon her own privilege and seeks to use her platform for activism and reform. In November 2016, she wrote an op-ed about President Donald Trump’s rhetoric as a world leader. Back in January 2017, she participated in the Women’s March in Washington, DC.

Keep up the good work, Lauren. It’s vital that popular artists use their platforms to speak up and support the black community. As Desmond Tutu said: “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”
