After George Floyd’s death, Irish musician Hozier expressed feelings of solidarity and support for the movement for justice.

Hozier has long used his art to support social causes. His 2018 song featuring Mavis Staples, “Nina Cried Power,” honors political activism and celebrates musicians who challenge systemic injustice. His debut album Hozier also explores rape culture and LGBTQ rights.

On Monday, May 25, George Floyd died while he was detained and pinned to the ground by the police. A viral video of the incident sparked protests across the United States and even around the world. Two days later, Hozier tweeted his condolences for Floyd’s family and praised the work of the protesters.

In the following week, Hozier has continued to show his support on Twitter. He shared links to different activist groups seeking donations, including the Minnesota Freedom Fund and Black Lives Matter. He also urged followers to send money to bail funds around the US.

Hozier also took a moment to reflect on what racial injustice in the United States means for the people of Ireland. In a screenshot message, he asked his fellow Irish citizens to find empathy and remember the brutality they once “faced at the hands of an imperial machine.”

Although some followers say he arrived a bit late to the conversation, Hozier seeks the end of injustice wherever it’s found, from Ireland to the United States and around the world. We hope that he continues to reflect, support, and take action in the fight against racism.
