Meghan Markle Breaks Silence on George Floyd Murder: ‘The Only Wrong Thing to Say Is to Say Nothing’
Meghan Markle speaks on the tragic and unjust killing of George Floyd.
Only the weak fail to speak; the former actress and Duchess of Sussex has stepped forward and commented on the killing of George Floyd and Black Lives Matter. Meghan delivered a powerful, poignant virtual address to the graduating class at Immaculate Heart High School, her former High School. The subject of her fiery, passionate speech was the poisonous political climate, the culture of contempt, and blatant acts of bigotry that we are currently witnessing. She clearly conveys her stance: ‘Black lives matter.’
“I wanted to say the right thing. I realised the only wrong thing to say is to say nothing. George Floyds life mattered & Breonna Taylors life mattered & Philando Castiles life mattered & Tamir Rices life mattered & so did so many other people” — Meghan Markle #BlackLivesMatter pic.twitter.com/KeIxkkooCc

Meghan explained to the graduating class that she has been ‘nervous’ to comment on George Floyd’s murder; this is a sensitive time where words can seem so cheap. There never seems to be the “right thing” to say and Meghan wanted to ensure that her statement was as eloquent, impactful, considerate, and effective as humanly possible. In an effort to highlight the persisting pattern of police brutality and the ongoing fight for the Black voice, Meghan referenced the 1992 Los Angeles riots (which were incited by the brutal beating of Rodney King).

Spouting hateful rhetoric or hiding in the dark, only feeds this white patriarch. We commend the Duchess of Sussex for stepping forward and using her platform to propel such an important movement. We continue to stand in solidarity with the victims and reiterate that this movement is not a fleeting fad: Black lives matter, not just today, or tomorrow…but always.
I am a plucky Sophomore at Wesleyan University with a passion for writing, fashion, running, and extremely strong coffee—so strong that it would make a 6’5’’ WWE wrestler weep. I am a small person with a big personality, only intensified by the coffee, that seeps into both my bold street and writing style. I am currently based in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area and am excited to work for such an empowering, female-focused publication. During this trying time in history it is more important than ever for women to continue lifting each other up and spreading positive energy!
