Emma Watson Speaks out on Systematic Racism and How We Can Begin to Fight It

Emma Watson took to social media this week to speak out as a British citizen on the Black Lives Matter Movement.

The Harry Potter and recent Little Women actress is a very vocal and present activist for causes such as women’s rights, the environment, and racial equality. Watson shared many posts in honor of George Floyd and even addressed her followers directly through a letter regarding her thoughts on the events happening in America.

Although the actress is a British citizen she took the events occurring in the U.S. very seriously and even connected them to the UK and their part in it. She called out the education system for its racist retelling of history urging her fans to help tear down and reform the way we are taught as kids. Watson has been a huge advocate for The Black Curriculum an organization that teaches Black History inside and outside of schools in the UK. Their mission is to change the Black History education given to young people to fight the racist conditioning that education cultivates.

The Black Curriculum, like the entire globe, has watched the sustained, horrific events of the last few weeks in the UK and US and the subsequent civil protests. These, alongside the stark socio-economic inequalities exposed by Covid19 that have impacted Black people across the UK, have moved us to amplify our existing campaign #TBH365. Our campaign is focused on changing the UK’s national curriculum – to include Black lived experiences and contributions throughout history. #TBH365 is primarily aimed at Gavin Williamson and builds on decades of lobbying and petitioning to include Black history across the curriculum and across all key stages. We will use social media to raise awareness and mobilise everyone to collectively change the national curriculum and help to bring equity, unity and healing to future generations.
