China Anne McClain Shares Her Experience as a Black Actress
Actress China Anne McClain gets real with her social media followers on what it’s like to be a Black actress in the entertainment industry.
The Black Lightning star recently shared a video on her Instagram describing her experience as a Black actress. She stated how she would get into conversations or even arguments with “white people telling [her] what would be most authentic coming out of [her] Black character’s mouth.” It has even started to make her uneasy because it has “happened more times than [she] is comfortable with.”
She ends her discussion with the statement: “Build a foundation of integrity.” If you are a person of color trying to get into the film or television industry, her advice to you would be “to create, and more importantly, to be responsible with it.” There are many different walks of life and she wants “to see different walks of life” represented on screen. “There is too much money being put into the entertainment industry just to show one facet of life.”

Hi! I am Hannah Forton pursuing a double major in Communications and Music Industry. I love traveling, sports, cooking, music, Broadway, movies, DIY, make-up, clothes, and tutorials. Some of my favorite work experiences includes an internship at a recording studio and working at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Helping and educating others is important to me, and I’ve enjoyed being able to do so through volunteering for numerous non-profits since middle school. I like the big city vibes, but small towns will always hold a special place in my heart. Living near Detroit allows me to achieve the best of both worlds.
