Pull Up or Shut Up: Self Tanner Company Tanologist Is Making Diversity A Priority

Lottie Tomlinson’s self-tan company has publicly recognized their lack of diversity amid current events and is now striving to change that.

This past Sunday, June 7, the vegan and cruelty beauty free company released a statement via Instagram to call themselves out in light of the 72-hour Pull Up or Shut Up challenge.

The Pull Up or Shut Up campaign was started by Sharon Chuter, UOMA Beauty’s CEO and Black Lives Matter activist, who wants brands to do more than just release a public statement regarding current events and condemning racism.

Dear Brands – Thank you for the public statements of support for the black community. Whereas we understand and appreciate the support, be conscious that to piggy back off a trending hashtag when you have been and continue to be a part of the problem is once again appropriating and exploiting the black community. So we ask all brands who have released a statement of support, to publicly release within the next 72hrs the number of black employees they have in their organisations at corporate level. We also need to know the number of black people you have in leadership roles. You all have statements and policies about being equal opportunity employers, so show us the proof! Tanologist got on board immediately and did just that, releasing their numbers, acknowledging where they have misstepped in the past, and recognizing that they need to do more; and will be doing so immediately. Tanologist’s corporate team has only 2.5% Black employees, with 5% being Women of Color.

The brand announced in the statement that as they continue to grow their US-based team, they will be shining a stronger light on diversity as they open positions and review applicants, as well as sharing their actions with their following as they work to “diversify the industry.”

Additionally, Lottie also announced that Tanologist made a $10,000 donation to the NAACP and are matching 100% of donations made by their team to the Black organizations they support.

We love when people are willing to respectfully acknowledge their mistakes and actively work to learn from them.
