Watch Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian Give a Candid Talk on Race and Inequality
Professional tennis player Serena Williams invited her husband Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit to her Instagram show Serena Saturdays to talk about race, inequality, and diversity. Last week, Ohanian announced that he would step down from the Reddit board, his position to be replaced by a Black candidate. During his talk with Williams on her Instagram show, he took the opportunity to explain why he ultimately made this decision. Ohanian said, “I thought about what I could do beyond a social media post, beyond a donation. We need diversity at the highest levels of business now more than ever. Once I realized why I needed to do it, it became very easy.”
Furthermore, he emphasized that his daughter Olympia was a major reason why he chose to step down. Ohanian confessed that it not only broke his heart that she might have to deal with these issues in the future, but also infuriated him. He said, “I’m sitting here like, if I’m this pissed off just now, how have you been able to endure your entire life? How have generations of Black Americans been able to endure your entire life? Because if I’m just getting this mad right now, I wouldn’t be able to function.”
Williams replied to her husband’s statements, saying that it’s been absolutely not easy and admitted that throughout her life and tennis career, she’s been treated differently due to the color of her skin.
Thank you GMA – this is just one small step. So much more work to do and tech is a key industry for change, but it’s gotta evolve everywhere. https://t.co/NxN9rejwaN

Ohanian believes his resignation will be a step towards change and set a good example for the tech and business industry as well.
