You Can Help Nikkie de Jager Pick Which Black Lives Matter Organizations to Donate to
All proceeds from Nikkie de Jager’s most recent YouTube video, in which she features Black-owned makeup brands, will be donated to viewers’ organizations of choice.
Viewers have a month to submit suggestions before de Jager announces how much money is raised and which organizations have been selected. De Jager also asked viewers to comment Black-owned beauty brands and Black creators for others to check out. Throughout the video, de Jager emphasized the importance of educating yourself and using your privilege to initiate change.
“I’m here to use my platform for the good. I’m going to be asking you to educate yourself,” said de Jager. “The racism and discrimination that is going on in our world need to change. I am very aware that there are so many more posts, videos, stories, articles that can tell you more about the story than I will ever be able to. I ask you to watch them, read them, search for them, consume all of them.”
De Jager announced that the United Nations recently asked her to be an ambassador, a position which entails using her platform to promote international cooperation and gender and racial equality.
“I’m seeing a lot of influencers not speak up, and I think their main reason is fear,” said de Jager. “A lot of Black folks out there, for the longest time pretty much always have felt uncomfortable knowing what to say to us… So us feeling uncomfortable and not knowing what to say tells you how tiring, how devastating it must have been for the black people out there talking to the white people. And even myself, I have been hesitant to speak for fear that I would say or do something wrong, or even insensitive. But fear is not a reason to not say something, to not contribute to the conversation.”
De Jager featured Black-owned beauty brands Juvia’s Place, Uoma Beaty, Ace Beaute, Makeup Addiction Cosmetics, Coloured Raine, and Beauty Bakerie in her video. She describes Juvia’s Place I Am Magic Foundation as “the most full-coverage foundation on the planet” and Makeup Addiction’s Holy Glow Vol. 1 as “one of the best highlighters out there.”
Her makeup look is inspired by Michael Brooks, who will soon be doing an Instagram story takeover for de Jager.
“As long as I have my platform and my voice to speak up for those that need it, I’m here,” de Jager said. “Maybe in the past I haven’t done it enough or in the right way, but every single day I am educating myself so I can educate others, and together we can change.”
