Stacey Abrams Took Over Selena Gomez’s Instagram and You Need to Hear What She Had to Say
The lawyer, author, politician and activist may have addressed her biggest audience ever when she took over the popular singer’s social media account.
Selena Gomez, one of the top five celebrities on Instagram with 181 million followers, joined other stars like Lady Gaga and Gwyneth Paltrow in giving prominent women of color access to their accounts. This campaign dubbed #ShareTheMicNow was an effort geared toward amplifying Black voices, their stories, and their call for action.
On June 16, Selena Gomez had her final Instagram take-over by Stacey Abrams. Stacey is a New York Times bestselling author, nonprofit CEO and political leader. After serving as Democratic Leader of the Georgia House of Representatives in 2018, she became the Democratic nominee for Governor of Georgia, where she won more votes than any other Democrat in the state’s history. Abrams was the first black woman to become the gubernatorial nominee for a major party in the United States.
Abrams later spoke about her correspondence with Gomez in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter saying, “I was privileged to be in communication with Selena. We had a really thoughtful conversation about the work that I’ve been doing, not only around voter suppression and the census, but why.” She continued, “[Selena] draws this amazing cross-section of people to her because they trust her voice, because they respect who she is, and because of the willingness to talk about tough challenges…Her willingness to not only share her story but to encourage others to participate in solving these problems by making sure that we fill out the census so the resources necessary for mental health investment can happen — that’s something that was extraordinary.”
Speaking of extraordinary, it has been quite an incredible time for Abrams. She is currently preparing for the release of her new documentary after having put out her latest book, and promoting the importance of the U.S. Census with Harness as part of its #BeCounted campaign.
