Jennifer Lawrence Joins Twitter to Fight Corruption and Police Brutality

After years of abstaining from social media, Jennifer Lawrence joined Twitter this week to speak out against racial injustice and police brutality. 

Unlike many celebrities, Jennifer Lawrence has preferred to remain quiet on social media. After years of avoiding Twitter, Lawrence broke from her more private tendencies and made an account. 

Lawrence’s username and first tweets show that her Twitter is more than a personal message board— it’s a political platform. Her display name, “Jennifer Lawrence – Represent.Us,” supports an organization that fights to end political corruption. In her first three posts, Lawrence advocated for prison reform, justice for Breonna Taylor, and voting rights in Louisville, Kentucky, which is her hometown. 

Within days, Lawrence amassed over 32,000 followers and acquired Twitter’s blue verification checkmark. Fans welcomed her with memes from The Hunger Games and thanked her for using her platform for justice.  

Despite her rapid climb in followers, it seems that Lawrence is taking things slow with her new Twitter account. She has yet to like someone else’s tweet, and she has only followed two accounts so far (Legal Defence Fund President Sherrilyn Ifill and RepresentUs). 

It can be intimidating to start a new social media account, even for celebrities. We hope that Jennifer Lawrence, beloved actor and the face of fictional political hero Katniss Everdeen, continues to use her powerful voice for justice and equality.
