Netflix Releases Gymnastics Scandal Documentary, ‘Athlete A’
Netflix’s recent documentary called Athlete A released on June 24th is the powerful story we all need to be tuning into.
The film follows the stories of the victims of the USA gymnastics sexual assault scandal that surfaced back in 2016. Recounting the events and crimes of USA gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar who was accused of over three hundred cases of sexual assault against female gymnasts. Survivors include Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, and hundreds of other women from decades of USA gymnastics. Athlete A is told primarily through Maggie Nichols, a survivor and the first one to come forth about the abuse in 2015.

Nichols sacrificed everything coming forward with her accusation against Nassar, including a spot on the USA team. However, her bravery and courage have made her a hero. Fighting together with all the other gymnasts who eventually choose to come forward, Nichols achieved justice for the crimes of Nassar as well as saved hundreds of future athletes. Producer and former champion Jennifer Sey has been a huge advocate for uncovering the abusive nature of USA gymnastics and is a big part of the documentary.
