Musicians Encourage Voter Registration in Virtual Roots Picnic Event

Roots Picnic

Celebrities and performers encourage voter registration at the Roots Picnic virtual concert hosted by Michelle Obama.

Tracee Ellis Ross, Chris Paul, H.E.R. and others will perform in the 13th annual Roots Picnic event on Saturday.

Usually, the hip-hop/R&B music festival is hosted in Philly, but this year the Roots Picnic will be completely virtual. The event also changed things up this year by partnering with Michelle Obama’s nonprofit When We All Vote to help people register to vote.

Co-hosted by Michelle Obama herself, this event will feature various young and popular Hip-hop, R&B and gospel artists. Performers include H.E.R., Lil Baby and SZA, with guest appearances and pre-recorded segments from Janelle Monáe, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Liza Koshy.

To promote the event, Michelle Obama, Kerry Washington, and Chris Paul all shared videos about Roots Picnic and voter registration on social media.

Through partnering with When We All Vote, The Roots hope to engage with as many as 500,000 underrepresented voters, especially Black individuals aged 21-35. The hip hop group hopes to inspire communities to use their votes for direct action against injustice.

You can watch the fun on YouTube.com/TheRoots in case you missed your favorite artists and get help registering to vote! Don’t forget to RSVP as well at weall.vote/rootspicnic
