Prince Harry Calls for Meaningful Change Amidst Political Uncertainty
There was more than one powerful message to be taken from Prince Harry’s latest virtual appearance.
Sharing his words for the 2020 Diana Awards, Harry, the Duke of Sussex, described racism as “endemic” in society before apologizing for the lack of progress seen among older generations in facilitating institutional reform. His words were a searing reminder to people of all ages, stressing the importance of a united front while tackling the discrimination once again spotlighted by the recent deaths of Black civilians.
But Harry also made sure to acknowledge the “incredible work” of young changemakers paving the way for positive changes in a time of “division, isolation and anger.” Calling them the world’s “greatest hope,” he expressed his confidence in “the world’s future and its ability to heal.”
In recent years, Harry and wife Meghan Markle have faced the brunt of racism from those opposing their inter-racial relationship. However, the royal couple has made persistent efforts to spread a message of acceptance. Harry reflected upon his late mother, Princess Diana, saying “She never took the easy route, or the popular one, or the comfortable one, but she stood for something, and she stood up for people who needed it,” and people on social media were quick to share the relevance of her legacy, too.
Princess Diana taught me to be genuinely kind to everyone I encounter, and to understand that everyone’s got a story.

These are words we can all take on board, as the message underscoring Harry’s video is that anti-discriminatory action can’t lose momentum. So make sure you continue to use your voice to help end racism once and for all.
