Patrisse Cullors Took Over Zendaya’s Instagram to Raise Awareness for Racial Justice
Black Lives Matter leader Patrisse Cullors took over Zendaya’s account to raise awareness of the global fight for racial justice.
As a co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement, Patrisse Cullors has a wealth of anti-racist knowledge to share. Cullors’s experiences as an LGBTQ activist, advocate for prison abolition, and college professor make her messages even more powerful.
On July 4, Zendaya gave Cullors access to her Instagram to share more BLM knowledge with her broad social audience. The takeover was part of the #f***the4th movement, which calls out the complex and problematic history of Independence Day in the United States.
After announcing the takeover, Cullors started her series of posts with a manifesto that lists ten ways to fight for Black people’s freedom. From defunding the police to remembering self-care, the list offers clarity for anti-racist activists wondering where to start.
Next, Cullors posted photos and videos about the enormous scope of the Black Lives Matter movement across the U.S. and around the globe.
She also shared information about key activist coalitions working to defund the Los Angeles police and the L.A. jail system, which is the largest in the world.
Finally, Cullors ended the takeover with a poignant compilation video celebrating the beauty and struggle of existing as a Black woman.
Zendaya never fails to use her social media to amplify activist voices. By sharing her account on July 4, Zendaya helped Cullors’s posts reach hundreds of thousands of people that may not have seen them otherwise. Even though Zendaya is an actor and celebrity, she has proven that people from any line of work can help spread the knowledge of those fighting for racial justice.
