How Angelica Ross Brings Black Transgender Visibility to Television
Actor and activist Angelica Ross interviewed with Interview Magazine to express how sharing her journey can be an inspiration for many others of the LGBTQ+ and Black community.
You may recognize Angelica Ross from her breakthrough role in Pose, an FX original series set in the 1980s of several LGBTQ members who find each other in New York after being denounced from their birth families. Ross’ portrayal of Candy Ferocity in Pose has made her a contender for an Emmy nomination in the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama category.
As she reflects on the current state of the country, Ross shares her story with Interview Magazine to help others facing similar situations find courage.

“In a year’s time, I know that I prayed—because that’s really all I could do, was pray- that telling Candy Ferocity’s story would create such a ripple effect throughout the world, that the murders of trans women would end. I’ve been so heartbroken to the reality that it shows no signs of stopping. It has been such a roller-coaster because I’m experiencing some of the highest highs and some of the lowest lows that I’ve ever experienced,” she said.
“It’s like, I’ll be featured in Essence magazine for Black women in Hollywood, and another Black trans woman is killed. I’d have some other historic win as a Black trans woman, more visibility, or another milestone in my career, and then another Black trans woman is killed. I feel like I’m on a seesaw and it feels difficult at times to celebrate my wins when so much is going on around me,” Ross told Interview Magazine when asked about her reflection on transformation within herself.
Throughout the article, Ross shares her experiences on self-love, finding her calling amidst a difficult time, and the creation of TransTech Social Enterprises, an organization dedicated to helping empower the T in the LGBTQ+ community through training, support, and jobs.
