The Weeknd Honors Black Lives Matter in New Animated Music Video for the ‘In Your Eyes’ Remix
Jeron Braxton created The Weeknd’s music video for his remix of “In Your Eyes,” where he honored the Black Lives Matter movement and highlighted Pride 2020.
The Weeknd’s official remix of “In Your Eyes” features Doja Cat, who sings from the perspective of his lover. Despite knowing that the relationship is dysfunctional and toxic, she stays and continues to love him. As The Weeknd and Doja Cat sing, Jeron Braxton offers an almost surreal and psychedelic experience into a parallel world through his animation.

Fans were quick to notice that Braxton included a couple of prominent symbols of police brutality and the LGBTQIA+ community. In the video, the police car said, “KKKPD,” referring to the Ku Klux Klan. The Ku Klux Klan, founded in 1865, is a white supremacist group that mainly targeted African Americans. In another instance, the police aimed a gun at The Weeknd, calling him an “unidentified black male” and a “high potential threat,” even though he was only drinking soda from a vending machine.

Lastly, Braxton animated The Weeknd driving away on a long rainbow road. Considering that Pride month is celebrated annually in June, the music video emphasizes the liberation and freedom to love anyone, despite their gender or sexual orientation. While the animated music video may resemble fictional cartoons at first, it contains multiple vital messages that the world must hear. It exposes police abuse, reflects on the recent killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, and teaches us that love is kind and accepting of everyone.
