Rachel Lindsay and her husband sat down to discuss how they navigate the unique struggles they face as an interracial couple.

Rachel Lindsay and her husband, Bryan Abasolo, have been married since August 2019.

Although the famous couple has previously discussed their day to day lives, the two recently sat down for a candid conversation with Emmanuel Acho, host of the YouTube series Uncomfortable Conversations.

Acho began their talk by admitting that he was surprised that Rachel ended up choosing Bryan. He explained, “I’m watching The Bachelorette and I see finally they chose a Black woman, they chose a Black queen and I’m thinking to myself, ‘Surely, she’s going to pick a Black king.'”

In response, Rachel said that she doesn’t think it’s right for people to judge her for who she dates regardless of their skin color, “I feel like they expect me to pick someone who looks just like me but that’s not fair.”

Later in the episode, Rachel stated that she previously struggled with dating outside of her race due to the stereotypes and assumptions that were projected onto her for being a Black woman. She went on to say, “Up until I was 30 I really didn’t date seriously outside of my race because I felt like society—not my parents, not my friends—society was telling me I had to pick a Black man.” Rachel continued to explain that one of the reasons she was so against interracial dating is because she felt like only people within her race would be able to understand her. “And I think that thinking is problematic because I understand me and I get it. And what I need from a partner is someone who is willing to understand things, is willing to ask questions,” she concluded.

We are so proud of Rachel and Bryan for having such an open conversation and thank them for sharing it with the world proving that love should never have boundaries.
