If you didn’t catch the cast of Mean Girls on Broadway in conversation with The Hate U Give author Angie Thomas you may want to tune in.
On July 7th, the cast came together with creator Tina Fey and author Angie Thomas to discuss the book and Black Lives Matter. The book is narrated by a young Black girl named Starr Carter, who is torn between two worlds based on race. The novel not only directly addresses racial identity but also police brutality as one of the characters is wrongfully shot by a white cop.
The live stream of the discussion can be found on the Mean Girls Broadway social media platforms. Broadway actresses, including Jonalyn Saxer and Kamille Upshaw, also joined the discussion by doing reviews and commentary on the book. The series’ overall mission is for the Mean Girls cast and all of Broadway to support Black Lives Matter by connecting with fans through reading.
Angie Thomas gives powerful insights into her book and expresses her views on how it is so relevant in today’s social climate. The live stream provides followers with easy access to an education outlet. The summer reading and education won’t stop there though, the cast will announce their second read later this month.
