Netflix’s historical drama, The Crown is getting a sixth season.

At the beginning of this year, the creator of The Crown Peter Morgan made a surprising announcement: that the series would end with five seasons. Back in January, Morgan said to The Hollywood Reporter, “At the outset, I had imagined The Crown running for six seasons but now that we have begun work on the stories for season five it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop… I’m grateful to Netflix and Sony for supporting me in this decision.”

But in a surprising turn of events, Morgan changed his mind, deciding to stick to the original six-season plan to tell the story of the British royals in full depth. In a statement, he expressed, “As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons.”

According to People, Olivia Coleman will still play Queen Elizabeth II for an additional season before Imelda Staunton takes over the same role in season six. Previously, Claire Foy took on the role of Queen Elizabeth II for the first and season.
