Kat Graham stars in the drama-heist thriller Cut Throat City in theaters July 31 and slave rebellion thriller Emperor, with the release date to be determined.

Both films’ release dates have been pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with Emperor’s initial release date set for over three months ago.

Cut Throat City is directed by musician RZA, who is the leader of the hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan and the creator of the streaming platform 36 Cinema. The film tells the story of four friends turning home to New Orleans Lower Ninth Ward after Hurricane Katrina. Without homes, jobs, or help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the friends are forced to ask the local gangster for help. The friends attempt to pull off the gangster’s dangerous heist, but when the job goes bad they find themselves on the run from two detectives and a neighborhood warlord.

“Hurricane Katrina was one of the deadliest hurricanes ever to hit the United States. It will be 15 years since this tragedy,” wrote 36 Cinema on a recent Instagram post. “The government and FEMA failed to do the right thing for its victims, including Puerto Rico during their disaster. Now- they are failing again to help tackle challenges with the CoronaVirus. In these types of disasters and climate, many people in our communities’ aspirations turn into desperation.”

The distributors of Cut Throat City are donating a portion of the film’s proceeds to lowernine.org, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the long-term recovery of New Orleans’ historic Lower Ninth Ward.

“So proud of this movie!” Graham wrote in a recent Instagram post. “One of the illest projects I’ve ever done in my life, and coming at a time where untold stories are finally being brought to light.”

Emperor is inspired by the true story of Shields “Emperor” Green, a descendent of African kings and an outlaw slave in the pre-Civil War South. The film follows Green’s journey as he escapes slavery and heads north to join forces with John Brown in the historic battle at Harpers Ferry, which helps spark the Civil War.

“In light of numerous theatre closures across the nation, the #EmperorMovie release date is being postponed,” wrote the official Instagram for Emperor. “Please stay tuned here for updates on when the film will be released.”
