On July 16th, 2020, Zedd and Jasmine Thompson’s first musical collaboration, “Funny”, premiered on YouTube.

In only under a week, the track accumulated almost 600,000 views on YouTube and landed 17th place on the American iTunes chart. In 2014, at only 14 years old, Thompson broke into the music industry with her debut single, “Sun Goes Down,” with Robin Schulz. Zedd, a German-Russian DJ, is known for many of his songs with talented artists, like Alessia Cara, Hailee Steinfield, Selena Gomez, Kehlani, and Troye Sivan.

In the amusing quarantine music video for “Funny,” the iconic duo “exaggerated” how Zedd and Thompson met and decided to collaborate, Zedd writes in his tweet.

In the video, Zedd reached out to Thompson by getting her phone number from a mutual friend, Lewis Capaldi, a Scottish singer-songwriter. Thompson was also pictured going through a breakup with her ex-lover, who mocked her for creating post-breakup music about him.

The song quickly became a fan favorite due to its emotion, overflowing feeling of freedom, and its message to move on from toxic relationships. In the bridge of “Funny”, Thompson sings, “It’s funny how you miss me / More than you could ever love me / How you couldn’t give me everything / And now you want it from me.”

The music video also highlights the good moments of being in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic and it attempts to bring positivity into people’s hearts amid a difficult time. It features adorable puppies and emphasizes that making music is not only possible despite being at home, but that music videos can be shot through Zoom, a teleconferencing software platform.
