Natalie Portman Is Leading the Group Responsible for the First Women Majority-Owned Soccer Team in LA
The actress is leading a mostly female celebrity-backed group of investors that is bringing a women’s soccer team to the City of Angels.
On Tuesday, Natalie Portman’s team announced that she will be leading a group of celebrity investors that is bringing a women’s soccer team to Los Angeles.
Among the others backing the team are tennis champion Serena Williams, actresses Jessica Chastain and Eva Longoria, soccer superstar Mia Hamm and many other influential women across different industries, making it the first ever women majority-owned and led ownership group.
The squad will enter the National Women’s Soccer League in spring 2022, making it the 11th team to join the eight-year-old league. The team will announce its official name and venue partner before the end of the year. For now, the group is calling itself “Angel City” after their home base, Los Angeles. This is quite fitting as the city has historically been a home base for the women’s national team. The 1999 World Cup match between the U.S. and China featured a record crowd of more than 90,000 spectators. No women’s soccer match organized by FIFA attracted more people.
Women’s soccer is riding high on the wave created by the U.S. women’s national team’s World Cup championship last summer. And while many fans are eager to support the players themselves, many are even more excited about the women backing the team.
What excites me most about Angel City is ownership group. Super progressive, and Mia Hamm has already been part of one of the most successful soccer franchise launches with LAFC. People cared about that team before they even had players. Hopefully the same can be done with ACFC!
