Bella Hadid Opens up About Diversity and Inclusivity in the Fashion Industry
The popular model recently spoke out about using her platform to spread awareness about important causes like Black Lives Matter, and you need to hear what she had to say.
Bella Hadid is calling on the fashion industry to do better.
Like many other celebrities and social media influencers, the model has been using her platform to raise awareness about the Black Lives Matter movement. In the early stages of its resurgence, Hadid took to Instagram to tell fans she has been “Listening. Understanding. Educating… Making calls to demand justice. Donating.”
In a recent interview with Elle magazine, Hadid opened up about the responsibility she has to younger people who look up to her as a role model: “I have so much responsibility to use my platform for good, especially as I get older. I want young girls and boys to know that it is okay to use your voice and demand justice for what is important to you. I want them to know it’s okay to be empathetic and gentle but to be strong and speak your truth at the same time.”

Hadid also spoke out about where she believes the fashion industry needs to change in terms of diversity: “Going into the next season, my fear is having to see another one of my Black girlfriends get her hair burned by a hair straightener, or do her own makeup because the makeup artist hasn’t been trained to work with all different skin types.” She also pointed out the hypocrisy of the fashion industry by contrasting its ideal of expression and individuality with the reality of how it discriminates because of those differences.
But even though the world of fashion may currently be under scrutiny for its lack of inclusion, Bella Hadid has found a way to use its artform for good. The collaboration between the model and Chrome Hearts has given her the opportunity to host an auction that features pieces she made herself at home. All of the proceeds from the event have been promised to go to organizations, such as Know Your Rights Camp and Feeding America, that have been actively supporting the Black community.
We are so proud to see the way Bella has been using her influence to spread awareness about and garner support for the Black community, and we hope her actions inspire other people to use their platforms to continue to do the same.
