How Late-Night Hosts Reacted to Donald Trump’s Election Tweet

Our favorite late-night show hosts Seth Meyers and Trevor Noah responded to Donald Trump’s recent tweet to postpone the presidential election.

We are less than one hundred days away from the presidential election as the country continues to battle the pandemic, social and racial injustices, and over-policing in communities. To preserve the health and safety of Americans during the state of Covid-19, government officials are advocating for mail-in ballots for the election in November. Trump, however, has made his opinion on the subject known via his Twitter account on Thursday.

On Late Night with Seth Meyers, Meyers pointed out how the election date, as determined in the U.S. Constitution, can only be moved if approved by Congress. Additionally, as per the Constitution, the president’s term (if not re-elected) will be over in January. “Oh, great, so not only is he casually suggesting incinerating American democracy,” says Meyers on his Closer Look segment after reading the Trump’s tweet, “but he’s doing it like he’s offering hors d’oeuvres at a party.”

Trevor Noah examines how Trump’s suggestion at postponing the election is “to not have one” on The Daily Show. After reviewing how the president does not have the power to delay the election, Noah states “this is the move of a dictator.” Noah then reviews how Joe Biden had previously predicted this would be Trump’s response, bringing up footage of Trump making a statement to Biden’s claim by saying, “I never even thought of changing the date of the election. Why would I do that? I look forward to that election, that was just made up propaganda.”

Currently, the election is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, November 3. You can locate your nearest polling place here.
