Sam Smith Released a New Song, ‘My Oasis,’ in Collaboration With Burna Boy

Capitol Records

On July 30, 2020, Sam Smith’s newest song, “My Oasis,” premiered on YouTube.

For “My Oasis,” Smith, a 28-year-old English artist, collaborated with Burna Boy, a Nigerian singer-songwriter. In only a couple of days, “My Oasis” accumulated around 2 million views and over 122,000 likes on YouTube. “My Oasis” is Smith’s first collaboration with Burna Boy, and the mid-tempo romance song addresses themes of playing with people’s emotions and emotional dependency in a relationship.

Smith originally planned to release their third album, To Die For, in March of 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the album had to be postponed and renamed. This past April, Smith also teamed up with Demi Lovato and released “I’m Ready.” “My Oasis” is an unexpected collaboration because while Smith sings heartbreaking ballads, Burna Boy is known for his dynamic dance beats, like in “On The Low” and “Gbona.”

Previously, Burna Boy collaborated with various artists such as Mahalia, Nicki Minaj, Jorja Smith, Stormzy, Ed Sheeran, Lily Allen, and Beyoncé. Besides English, Burna Boy often sings in multiple other vernaculars and languages, including Pidgin English and Yoruba.

In “My Oasis,” Smith sings, “You play with my emotions / I’m flowin’ like the ocean / I pray for your devotion / ‘Cause there’s nothing I can do when it comes to you,” and Burna Boy continues, “I gave you my heart, you’re makin’ it so dark / But there’s nothing I can do when it comes to you / You takin’ it for granted.” Click down below to listen to the full track of “My Oasis,” and check out Burna Boy’s other songs.
