A ‘Dirty Dancing’ Sequel Is in the Works and We Couldn’t Be More Thrilled

Get ready to put on some dancing shoes, because Dirty Dancing, the classic eighties film, is getting a sequel 33 years after its original release.

When Dirty Dancing came out in theaters in 1987, nobody – not even the stars of the film – I knew that it would have such an effect on pop culture even three decades later. 

It seems like everybody, regardless of age, gender, or background, knows about the iconic lift scene at the end of the movie to the tune of (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes.

Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze led the whirlwind summer romance movie in a way that captured the hearts of teens and young adults everywhere, which made it a cult classic movie instantly.

Now, 33 years later, it is getting an official sequel including the main character herself.

Jennifer Grey will be reprising her memorable role as Frances “Baby” Houseman, as well as executive producing the project.

Patrick Swayze, who played Johnny Castle, was the leading man that Grey had undeniable chemistry with on and off the screen, but unfortunately passed away in 2009 from pancreatic cancer.

It is unknown what role his well-known character will play in the storyline of the sequel, but we do know that the movie is being done with Swayze’s memory right at the forefront of everyone’s mind.

The movie will be released by Lionsgate, of whose CEO, Jon Feltheimer, recently told The Guardian that the Dirty Dancing sequel “will be exactly the kind of romantic, nostalgic movie that the franchise’s fans have been waiting for and that has made it the biggest-selling library title in the company’s history.”

With Patrick Swayze on the mind and Jennifer Grey on board, this long-time-coming sequel is sure to bring back all of the fun, retro, confusing teenage feelings that the original Dirty Dancing so gracefully depicted on screen.
