On August 6, 2020, Noah Cyrus released an official cover of Stevie Wonder’s “For Once in My Life.”

Stevie Wonder, the legend of soul and R&B, released his musical masterpiece “For Once in My Life” in 1967. Many are well-acquainted with Wonder’s iconic songs, such as “I Just Called To Say I Love You” and “Isn’t She Lovely.” On July 26, Cyrus first hinted at her forthcoming release of “For Once in My Life” on her Instagram live.

Cyrus, a 20-year-old singer-songwriter, added her signature modern country twist to the rhythm in “For Once in My Life.” Cyrus’s fans were also quick to notice that unlike Wonder’s version of the track, Cyrus’s cover contained a festive and optimistic Christmas atmosphere. Before Wonder’s release of “For Once in My Life,” the song was performed by Barbara McNair, Jean DuShon, Tony Bennett, Diana Ross, and others. However, the most successful version of the cover is attributed to Stevie Wonder. In 1968 and 1969, Wonder’s cover remained a hit on the United Kingdom and the United States charts.

Cyrus’s cover of “For Once in My Life” has also debuted in Sony’s newest campaign for their noise-canceling headphones. In the campaign video for Sony’s WH-1000XM4 earphones, an excerpt from Cyrus’s cover begins to play as soon as the star of the video puts on the earphones.

As both Wonder and Cyrus sing, “For once unafraid I can go where life leads me / Somehow I know I’ll be strong,” and they continue, “For once in my life, I won’t let sorrow hurt me / Not like it’s hurt me before.”

We hope to hear more of Cyrus’s covers soon, but in the meanwhile, make sure to also listen to her newest covers of Lund’s “Broken” and Vance Joy’s “Riptide.”
