Oprah Winfrey Calls for Justice for Breonna Taylor Through Billboards

O, the Oprah Magazine, has put up 26 billboards, one for every year of Breonna Taylor’s life, across Louisville, Kentucky.

The billboards state to “demand that the police involved in killing Breonna Taylor be arrested and charged,” and mention Until Freedom, which is a social justice organization that has been urging for the police officers involved to be arrested and convicted. On their website, there are many resources to learn more about what happened or get involved by protesting, calling, or donating. They urge people to take action and to hold the police officers accountable for their actions.

It has been 148 days since March 13, 2020, the day that Taylor died. Since then one out of the three police officers have been fired from their job and no-knock warrants have been banned in Louisville.

The artwork displayed on the billboard was the cover image from the September issue of O Magazine. This is the first time in the 20 years of the magazine that Winfrey won’t be featured on the cover of her magazine. Taylor’s face will be displayed across the city where she lived as a reminder of what happened.

Her death has been mourned by millions of people and has sparked protests across the country. The public has voiced their concerns about police brutality. For many, the attention being brought to her death opened people’s eyes to lives, just like hers, who have been lost due to racially motivated actions.

It has been 150 days since Breonna Taylor was shot and killed by Louisville police during a “no-knock warrant” raid. In the months since, just one of the three officers involved—Brett Hankison—has been fired, and neither he nor the two other officers, Jonathan Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove, has been arrested or charged in her death. 150 days with no justice. Now, @oprah and our O team are further amplifying Breonna’s story and the fight for justice in her name by erecting 26 billboards of our September cover across her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. Each billboard—one for each year of her life—features the cover image with a call to action that reads: “Demand that the police involved in killing Breonna Taylor be arrested and charged. Visit UntilFreedom.com.” Tap the link in our bio for more. Breonna, sorry it’s taking this long 🙏🏽 (📸: @mitchellpj)

The billboard also features a quote from Winfrey that states, “If you turned a blind eye to racism, you become an accomplice to it.”
