Nia DaCosta Set to Direct ‘Captain Marvel’ Sequel

Marvel

American director and screenwriter, Nia DaCosta, will be directing Captain Marvel 2, set for release on July 8, 2022.

Captain Marvel 2 will star Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel and is penned by Megan McDonnell (Wandavision). The film is in the pre-production phase and the plot is currently unknown.

DaCosta is the fourth female director and first Black female director to direct a Marvel Studios production, and this action is part of their continued push for more inclusion in their higher up creative positions. Captain Marvel was the first solo female led movie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Fans are thrilled to see DeCosta join the team and can’t wait to see her work on the big screen.

The keys to the multi-million dollar franchise are now in DaCosta’s hands. She is taking over for Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck who worked on the first Captain Marvel in 2019. Marvel is known for bringing on new talent and directors in between sequels, as seen for Thor and Iron Man, in order to bring fresh eyes and ideas to the table.

DaCosta was first recognized as a prestigious filmmaker after writing and directing the critically acclaimed film Little Woods in 2018, featuring Tessa Thompson and Lily James. Another reputable work of hers is Candyman where she directed and co-wrote the script alongside Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld. The movie is a revival of the 1992 film Candyman and is set to be released in October of 2020.

With DaCosta having experience with a critically acclaimed indie film and low-budget movie, we can expect great things to come out of Captain Marvel 2 and are so excited to see the finished product.
