Janelle Monáe has been reminding us why ‘social activist’ should be added to her list of credits as she continues to call for social reform through her engagement with changemakers of the now.

Even with the world at a standstill, Monáe’s been paving the way for positive change by using social media to amplify the voices of changemakers leading the fight for equality. Using Instagram to vocalize the struggles faced by Black members of the LGBTQ+ community, the singer highlighted how their hardships have been perpetuated with the global health pandemic and called for recognition of the changemakers we should all be supporting. It’s a message that she’s been promoting in the long-term. Back in 2015, she established the Wondaland Arts Society, a directorial company striving to diversify artistic industries and add more color to Hollywood.

Janelle is also keeping the conversation going when it comes to race in America. In a recent interview for Harper’s Bazaar, the singer spoke with Georgia representative Stacey Abrams to share a candid conversation on current political strifes. Touching on the deaths of Black civilians, they stressed the need to channel our emotions into the fight for social injustice to help uplift movements like Black Lives Matter. In a call for collective action, Abrams explained how “we’ve got the power to influence what happens next.” Their discussion is insightful and current, so is well worth a browse. You can read it via the post below.

The singer has also been working hard off-screen as the leading lady of numerous TV and film projects. Antebellum, a thriller that sees Monáe adopt the role of an author stuck in a horrifying alternate reality, will be released in September on all major streaming platforms.
