Emmy award-winning actor and author Terrence Terrell recently partnered with director Anthony Hemingway to produce a new short film about mental health and self-love.

The new short, called Skin Deep, is based on Terrell’s personal experiences growing up. The main character of the story is Skylar, a Black boy navigating his way through colorism, mental health challenges, and learning to love his skin. In a statement, Terrell explained his childhood inspiration for Skin Deep. “This story is personal to me, it’s my journey of overcoming the adversity I faced growing up,” he said. Terrell hopes that the film will inspire others to overcome their own challenges.

Hemingway first learned of the project when he saw that Terrell had launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the film. Already a supporter of Terrell’s books, Hemingway jumped on the chance to produce the film through his company, Anthony Hemingway Productions.  Hemingway stated that supporting Terrell was “not only an exciting choice but also a personal responsibility… Black Americans are dying, and not just at the hands of the police. We are suffering from mental disorders.”

The film will be animated by 6 Point Harness, the same animation studio that produced the award-winning short film, Hair Love. To promote the production of Skin Deep and keep the community involved and engaged, Terrell asked his Instagram followers to help pick a design for the main character, Skylar.
