‘The Legend of Korra’ Just Dropped on Netflix Today

Nickelodeon Animation Studios

Nickelodeon’s animated series, The Legend of Korra, is now available to stream on Netflix, and fans are ecstatic.

The show is part of the same fictional world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, leading many fans to often compare the two programs to each other. The Legend of Korra and Avatar: The Last Airbender are considered two of the most popular animated programs to come out of Nickelodeon, each boasting a large fanbase and following to this day. Avatar: The Last Airbender was released back in 2005, and ran for three years total. Although it was intentionally aimed at kids, the show’s mature themes resonated with older audiences, specifically, teens and young adults. Thanks to the widespread success of Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra was created as a follow-up story, and aired from 2012 to 2014.

The spinoff series is set seventy years after the events of Avatar and introduces the audience to new characters, settings, and story arcs while still honoring the legacy of its predecessor. While some fans argue that the sequel is not as good as the original, many still believe that Korra stayed true to the original series and managed to address complex sociopolitical themes still relevant in today’s world. In anticipation of the show’s release on Netflix, a fan on Twitter recently reminded viewers to keep in mind that the main characters of Avatar and Korra are distinct from one another, and should be celebrated for their differences.

Michael Dante DiMartino, the co-creator and executive producer of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra posted a throwback photo of himself, his co-creator Bryan Konietzko, and voice actress of Korra Janet Varney. In the post, he expresses his hope that his fans enjoy watching the show on Netflix. He and Konietzko are still very much involved in the Avatar universe, and frequently update fans on their latest involvements and projects.

Most recently, both of them posted statements on their decision to part ways with Netflix on the upcoming live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, citing creative differences.

Well, friends… there you have it. Big sigh. 💔⬇️💔 I’m sure many of you will understandably want to know more and will ask me questions in the comments, here and on subsequent posts and live-streams and in-person encounters and everywhere else ad infinitum. I wish I could explain things in greater detail, but the above statement is really all I can say about the matter so I won’t be answering any of those. I encourage you to head over to my partner Michael DiMartino’s account to get his take on our departure too: @mike_dante_d Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of the Avatar: The Last Airbender fans, and I’m sorry our involvement in the live-action project did not work out. Time to get on with my life. Onward and upward. 💙 Love, Bryan #avatarthelastairbender #cocreators #michaeldimatino #bryankonietzko #bryke #atla #liveactionseries #netflix
