Japanese Rock Star Miyavi Revolutionizes Performances During COVID-19
Miyavi speaks on how the pandemic affects live performance and what solution he found.
Miyavi was born in Takasama Ishihara, Osaka in 1981. He is mostly known for his catchy fast-paced electro-rock music. Ever since his debut, his schedule was booked with constant live performance until this year.
Miyavi works in the USA and Japan, making his career extremely hard at the moment due to the pandemic. In an interview with The Verge, the singer said how hard it is for creators to find ways of performing live. His initial plan was to record music videos regularly in Japan because they are still open, however, he couldn’t do the same in the United States.
For safety purposes, Miyavi decided on creating an animation styled music video for his song ‘Holy Nights’. The video came out in May announcing “Miyavi Virtual”. The purpose of “Miyavi Virtual” is to create a world without having him present.
At first, Miyavi experimented with a mixture of VR, AR, and reality. The result looked like a video game. Next, he tried going live on streaming platforms like Twitch, Youtube, and Line. The results weren’t as good as the singer wanted. Finally, he tried combining high tech experimentation and live broadcast. It succeeded.
