Katy Perry Releases Her Stripped Down Song Called ‘What Makes a Woman’
Katy Perry has released her new song “What Makes a Woman,” which will be part of her upcoming album, Smile.
As Perry has grown on her musical journey, her music has matured with her; this song is a perfect example of that. When she went into the studio she planned to compose a song called “What Makes a Woman.” As she explains in the lyrics there isn’t one correct answer so you could spend forever trying to pin down the exact words to describe a woman and still never be able to.
The song shows a raw, emotional glimpse into Perry’s perspective of womanhood. It’s difficult to calculate everything that a woman is comprised of because there are so many amazing and unique qualities. The whole purpose of the song is to empower women and remind them they are capable of doing more than anyone believes. Women can take on the whole world and be left unscathed.
Perry took inspiration from her experience of being pregnant. According to Billboard, Perry states she felt “very empowered creating a life and being a working woman whilst doing that,” and she “secretly dedicates” this song to her unborn daughter.

When her daughter comes into the world Perry doesn’t want her to feel limited in her options because she, just like every other woman, can do anything they please. Women have so many different sides and no one should attempt to put boundaries on what they can or can’t do.
Perry has noted that this song is one of her favorites from her new album. The video released along with the song is a live performance directed by Tim Sekiguchi.
