Artist Yayoi Kusama Is Getting Immortalized With a Graphic Novel Paying Homage To Her
The Japanese artist most famous for her Infinity Rooms is starring in a graphic novel coming out very soon.
Yayoi Kusama is one of the most influential artists in the art world today. Often referred to as “the polka dot princess”, she works with paintings, poetry, performances, sculptures, and installations. One of her most popular pieces of work is her Infinity Room, as you may have already seen a thousand times on Instagram. But one thing that you can find in all of her art is polka dots.
Kusama’s reasoning behind her constant use of polka dots goes back to her childhood when she would have hallucinations of a flower field. She was terrified by the vivid visions of the reoccurrence of dots in floral patterns and bright lights that consumed the room to the extent that she felt being obliterated, as stated by The Jakarta Post. Kusama, as strong and admirable as she is, used this fear to create something beautiful. What she decided to do with her struggles rose her to stardom and made her the art icon she is today.
The graphic novel will be illustrated by Elisa Maceralli, a Thai-Italian illustrator who has done work for The New York Times and Cartoon Network, amongst others. The 128-page novel will take you through Kusama’s journey from rural Japan to New York, where she realized her childhood dreams of becoming an artist.
