Lewis Capaldi Performs ‘Before You Go’ at MTV’s 2020 VMAs Pre-Show
Lewis Capaldi graced us with an emotionally filled performance of “Before You Go” at the VMAs pre-show.
Like all the other performers, Capaldi set his space away from the crowds and accompanied himself with a single keyboardist. The raw performance placed Capaldi in a dimmed room, aestheticized by red-hued lighting.
Young and raw, Capaldi’s set the bar as his vocals poured through the viewers’ screens during the pre-show, demonstrating the singer’s natural talent.
Still slow dancing in my living room to this @LewisCapaldi performance! 😍 #VMAs pic.twitter.com/sscmi4CXPN

The Scottish singer/songwriter, only 23, was set to tour with Niall Horan this year on the “Nice To Meet Ya” tour. However, it had to cancel due to the pandemic. He released “Before You Go” as an extension to his groundbreaking debut album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent. Capaldi has previously spoken about the soul-laden song and the meaning behind its lyrics.
Back on April 22, Capaldi was on an episode of Verified At Home by digital media company Genius. Here, he opens up about the song being for his late aunt, who took her life away when Capaldi was young. He discusses how the opening lyrics “sets the song on the wrong foot,” and how its an expression of wishing you could have been there for that person. At the end of the episode, Capaldi encourages people to be there for those in need and help them open up.
