Critically Acclaimed Film ‘Moonlight’ Celebrates Fourth Anniversary
Four years ago today, the Academy Award-winning film, Moonlight, was released into theaters.
Moonlight is the iconic film telling the story of a queer, Black man living in the impoverished area of Miami. The film stars: Mahershala Ali, Ashton Sanders, Janelle Monae and more.

Moonlight was arguably one of the first LGBTQ+ films starring a Black lead that reached the mainstream media, and the first LBGTQ film with a queer POC lead to win an Oscar. Needless to say, the film was groundbreaking for breaking stereotypes and bringing to light the LGBTQ+ experience from a POC’s perspective.
Additionally, Moonlight broke barriers in terms of Muslim representation in the Western media, particularly for African American Muslims, who are often under-represented in Hollywood. Leading actor, Mahershala Ali paved the way for young Muslims to pursue a career in Entertainment being the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar.

Now more than ever, this film stays in our mind as a reminder to Hollywood of the importance of diversity and representation.
