The Princess Diaries cast comments on the production for a third movie.

It has been over 15 years since Princess Mia Thermopolis returned to Genovia in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. After all the Academy-Award winner’s roles in other movies, she is willing to return to Disney for a new project.

There has not been much official talk in regards to the third movie. However, the original cast from the first two movies has been commenting on their eagerness for another movie.

Gary Marshall, director of Princess Diaries, died in 2017 during his creation of something new for the franchise. In 2016, Marshall opened up on Larry King Live about the potential for a third movie, “Well, they talk about it. Disney always likes to announce things, so they tell Garry, ‘Shut up, we’ll announce it.’ Anne Hathaway came to my office, she was quite pregnant… she puts her computer on the table, pushes three buttons, there’s Julie Andrews on Skype in Long Island. And we have a meeting. I hope they do it.”

Unfortunately, fans will not be able to see what Marshall was creating. The passing of one of the main contributors has not stopped the cast from holding hope. Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway are adamant about fulfilling what Marshall wanted.

Hatheway admitted in 2019 that there is a script and they are taking their time to perfect it.

“There is a script for the third movie…I want to do it. Julie wants to do it. Deborah Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen, it’s just we don’t want to do it unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it, it’s as important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it.”

Additionally, Andrews commented to The Talk in April that she’d love to go back to Genovia one last time.

“It’s long been talked about but nothing sort of been on my desk or anything like that. I think I would. I’m going awfully old and crotchety. I’m not sure if it’s the right timing, but I think to work with Annie would be lovely again. And yeah, sure, I would be up for it. I think we should wait if the script comes in just wait for that.”

Thirdly, Lily Moscovitz, played by Heather Matarazzo, added another comment about a third movie while on The Morning Show in July. Matarazzo mentioned an even bigger urge to complete the movie, due to Marshall’s death.

“I know there is a script written, and we lost the captain of our ship, Garry Marshall, a few years ago. I think we have a little bit of a fire under our butt to get this done.”

She also added that the pandemic is causing a bigger delay in the process.

Cast from the sequel including Mandy Moore and Chris Pine has seen huge success from the movie. They are both willing to come back to Disney screen and return to the franchise for a third installment.

Pine commented during an interview for The Finest Hours in 2016. He was asked if he prayed there would be a third movie. He responded by asking, “Have you been reading my diary?”

Moore commented by hoping she would only have a cameo in the third movie.

“If I’m going to be involved, I would be down for a cameo—maybe she could make amends with Mia and apologize for being a bully when she was younger. She was insecure, going through a difficult time in her life and reflected on why that wasn’t okay.”

Let’s hope Moore will showcase more than a cameo.

Stay updated on what sounds like a definite trilogy in the works. It appears as if patience is all The Princess Diaries fans need for them to experience the third movie.
