Wonder Woman 1984 is now eyeing a Christmas Day release after being delayed multiple times due to COVID-19.

Director Patty Jenkins officially announced the decision to detain the film on Friday after multiple news sources speculated the decision.

“First and foremost let me say how much Gal and I love all our devoted Wonder Woman fans around the world, and your excitement for WW84 couldn’t make us happier or more eager for you to see the movie,” Jenkins said in a statement. “Because I know how important it is to bring this movie to you on a big screen when all of us can share the experience together, I’m hopeful you won’t mind waiting just a little bit longer. With the new date on Christmas Day, we can’t wait to spend the holidays with you!”

Wonder Woman 1984 was originally set to release worldwide on June 5 before ultimately being pushed to August 14. In that timeframe, Warner Bros. made the decision to give fans an October 2 release in hopes of theater re-openings.

With the underperformance of Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, the studio has agreed on a new date of December 25.

The movie stars Gal Gadot as DC heroine Wonder Woman and features actor Chris Pine reprising his role as Steve Trevor. The sequel will also welcome new characters played by Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) and Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian).

In a plot summary provided by IMDb, the film will be about a “fast forward to the 1980s as Wonder Woman’s next big-screen adventure finds her facing two all-new foes: Max Lord and The Cheetah.” Last month, DC’s FanDome event shared the final trailer to the highly anticipated movie.

Wonder Woman 1984 will debut in theaters nationwide on Christmas Day. For more news on the release and exclusive content, follow @wonderwomanfilm. While we all want to see this movie as soon as possible, we know the wait will be beyond worth it and can’t wait to see it in December.
