Katherine Ryan Brings More Laughs to Netflix in ‘The Duchess’

If you know Kathrine Ryan, you know the title of her show The Duchess is a match made in Netflix heaven.

You may have heard of the comedian from her Netflix specials, In Trouble or Glitter Room. Her comedy includes lots of sarcasm, dashes of feminism, and a lot of dirty jokes. She’s not afraid to say some eye-opening statements to get a laugh out of her crowd. Her particular wit and grit will be on full display in her new Netflix show The Duchess.
Ryan serves as executive producer, writer, and star in her debut scripted series.
Please tell me I’m not the only one who watched #THEDUCHESS in one sitting then promptly restarted the whole series bc there just weren’t enough episodes 😭 @Kathbum

Ryan plays a caricature of herself as a single mother to nine-year-old girl Olive and she happens to be just as loud and brash as she typically is onstage. The two maintain a good relationship but the relationship with Olive’s father seems more strained as he is a washed-up rockstar with no decent future ahead of him. Katherine however, is maintaining a nice enough relationship with Evan, whom she worries about scaring away. The inciting incident of the show is that for Olive’s birthday, Olive asks her mother for a sibling and chaos ensues.
At a glance, the show reflects the humor and honesty that Fleabag brought with Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s writing genius. Waller-Bridge put the spotlight on showing a very real, feminine view of life for a single woman just trying to live despite all the terrible choices she made. Ryan instills her unequivocal voice within the dialogue while also maintaining her jaw-dropping situational comedy as a single mom.
Fans of the show like Sam Smith have been taking to Twitter after a quick binge (there are only six episodes) to declare their love for Katherine the character, who might as well be Katherine Ryan.
The duchess on Netflix is so good. I want to be her
