Capitol Records

The talented Jorja Smith released a powerful music video for her hit song “By Any Means.”

Jorja Smith, a 23-year-old British singer, released a music video on August 10 for her song, “By Any Means”– a piece that details her experience with Black Lives Matter and being Black in the U.K. The song is the lead single from Roc Nation’s Reprise project, a compilation album of social justice-themed songs. According to Pitchfork, some charities for the project are: ” the Gathering for JusticeNACDL Foundation for Criminal JusticeEqual Justice Initiative Mission, and the Cop Accountability Project.”

Smith made her debut album, Lost and Found, in 2018, and since then has continued to grow in popularity with over 3 million followers on Instagram. Her song speaks of the pain she has dealt with, repeating in her chorus, “Too many destinies too many sentences, Read now, Read now see all this pain in the headlines” echoing the message of the Black Lives Matter movement. The music video consists of montages of Black people of every demographic, along with links to Black Lives Matter resources and information.

In an interview, Smith states that: “The inspiration behind ‘By Any Means’ really came from going to the Black Lives Matter protest and leaving thinking, what can I do to keep this conversation going…It’s not just a post on social media, it’s life.”

Earlier this year, Smith explored her roots with jazz music by covering French musician St Germain’s 2000 single “Rose Rouge.” Although the original is instrumental, Smith delivered lyrics with the silky smooth music that is worth listening to.
