On Septemeber 16th, the annual American Country Music Awards took place, featuring a performance from Guyton, the first Black female to perform at the award show.

The performance took place at the Grande Ol Opry in Nashville, where Guyton gave a stunning performance, singing “What Are You Gonna Tell Her” with legendary country singer Keith Urban playing as piano accompaniment. The performance was outstanding; Guyton’s powerful vocals harmonized seamlessly with Urban’s piano instrumental.

Guyton was nominated for the “New Female Vocalist Award” in 2016 at the ACM Awards, and we are so happy to see her make another appearance at the show.

The 37-year-old is not only a talented country singer but also one of the few POC representing the genre. Rising to fame with her hit song “Better Than You Left Me,” Guyton pushed down barriers showing that country music was for everyone to perform and enjoy, regardless of race. According to her website, Guyton has received many accolades, stating that, “She has also been spotlighted in People magazine’s American Voices feature, Billboard magazine as one of Country music’s ‘female game changers,’ and Entertainment Weekly as one of the ‘new queens of country music.'”

She also received applause from the Country community, with famous singer Shania Twain commenting on her Instagram post, “You deserve it all congratulations!!”
