Christian Siriano Brings a Pandemic-Proof Show to NYFW
The fashion industry’s greatest strength is its fight for survival through any crisis.
This trait is proven true yet again as New York Fashion Week has occurred this past week despite a pandemic, social unrest, and economic collapse.
This year, NYFW is not only different in how the shows are produced—mask protocols and social distancing are in full effect—the designers showing collections have been shuffled in light of these changing times. Many retailers such as Gucci, Michael Kors, and Giorgio Armani have decided that the fashion calendar is not healthy for the speed of the industry and the amount of production is not beneficial to the climate crisis. Therefore they have opted out of this fashion week.

One designer who decided to show at Fashion Week was Christian Siriano, who turned his atelier into a mask-making factory at the beginning of the pandemic. All of the masks made were donated to healthcare workers, completely funded by donations.
Siriano’s show occurred in his own backyard to ensure everyone’s safety, if anything, it added to the visual impact of the collection. Seeing fashion so boldly put on display in an exterior space feels liberating in light of the circumstances.

His creations came in gorgeous bright colors, fiercely feminine silhouettes, and matching masks for each look. It is no surprise to see the models wearing his sophisticated gowns represent many ages, sizes, skin-tones. This is simply Siriano’s dedication to diversity on his runway.
Whether you love a striking suit, elegant ruffles, or a statement dress with ‘Vote’ all over it, you’re bound to fall in love with one of his looks.

Where else are you going to see a pregnant Coca Rocha fling herself in a pool to close the show? Christian Siriano, of course!
Many NYFW designers made movies this year. Not Christian Siriano, who mounted his most expensive fashion show ever at home in Connecticut, ending with Coco Rocha making a splash. https://t.co/iS66gGvF2v
