Emmy-winning actress Zendaya’s next role will be portraying singer Ronnie Spector in a film about her life.

The biopic is being produced by A24 and New-Regency, and the companies have reportedly obtained the rights to Spector’s life and her autobiography Be My Baby that was written with Vince Waldron.

According to Variety, the film will focus on Spector’s early life and the origination of the popular Ronettes group. A24 and New-Regency are reportedly considering Jackie Sibblies Drury, who won a Pulitizer for her writing on the play Fairview, to write the screenplay.

Deadline revealed that Spector herself specifically chose Zendaya for the role. Zendaya will be producing the biopic alongside Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, Mark Itkin, and Tom Shelly. Jonathan Greenfield and Spector will be the exec producers on the project.

Just a few weeks ago, Zendaya made history by becoming the youngest woman ever to win an Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of Rue in HBO’s Euphoria, which is also produced by A24.

This year, Zendaya is set to star in Denis Villeneuve’s film adaption of Frank Herbert’s popular novel Dune. The actress is also expected to start filming the third installment of Marvel’s Spider-Man films next spring.

A production date for the biopic has yet to be released. We look forward to seeing Zendaya take on the iconic role of Ronnie Spector for the film screen.
