Trump Ends COVID-19 Relief Negotiations

Twitter

Following President Trump’s recent departure from Walter Reed Medical Center for COVID-19 treatment, he has now announced that all COVID-19 relief negotiations will come to a halt.

Trump decided not to further assist the Americans who have been affected by the coronavirus until after the election. There has been a long back and forth about how Americans would receive further support for what has been a long, unpredicted standstill for the economy.

Nancy Pelosi was among the first to put out a statement following the President’s decision. Trump has accused the Speaker of the House of not negotiating properly for the citizens in need. However, Pelosi has stated that she believes Trump’s move shows that he is putting himself before the American people. Trump has directed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to confirm Supreme Court nominee, Amy Coney Barrett.

As a result of Trump’s decision making, the Dow dropped significantly on Tuesday, once it was announced that stimulus discussions had come to a halt. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell warned Trump about the fragility of the current economy. Powell warned that the seven-month pandemic has had detrimental effects on the country’s economy and that continuing to hold relief could only make matters worse. Despite the fair warning, Trump tweeted that the U.S. was leading in economic recovery.

The President has been known to change his mind and opinions quickly, but there is no telling if he will change his mind on this matter. We can only hope that he would take a moment and think of the millions who are unemployed, and all of those currently facing eviction. We must expect that having experienced the virus, the President will think of someone other than himself and provide the relief that many are desperate for.
