Lucy Hale Brings Awareness of Domestic Violence With Red Rover and Purina Purple Leash Project

Lucy Hale is spreading awareness about domestic violence during National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month, which is meant to emphasize the importance of stopping domestic violence and making a continuous effort to end it.

Hale recently collaborated with Red Rover and Purina’s Purple Leash Project to help prevent pets and people from being stuck in a domestic violence environment. According to the project, “one in three women and one in four men experience domestic abuse in their lifetime.”

In addition, the project mentions that as little as 10% of shelters for domestic violence accept pets.

Hale shared her thoughts about the low number of domestic violence shelters that are available to pets with PEOPLE. “As a huge pet lover and advocate against domestic violence, I was honored when Purina asked me to help bring awareness to the Purple Leash Project. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and it is so important to shine a light on an ongoing and often silent issue that affects domestic abuse victims and their pets.”

The actress said, ”I couldn’t believe when Purina shared with me that only 10% of domestic violence shelters in the US allow pets, this lack of pet-friendly shelters often leaves victims with a heartbreaking decision of enduring abuse in order to stay with their pet or leave their pet behind. I immediately had passion for this cause because I can’t imagine having to make that choice. No one should have to.”

Pets are a huge part of the family — Elvis is no exception. Many victims of domestic violence will stay where they are out of fear of leaving their pets behind. 1 in 3 women, and 1 in 4 men, will experience domestic abuse in their lifetimes. This is an issue that is extremely close to my heart because without our pets, who would we be? That is why, in honor of #DomesticViolenceAwareness month, I’m Taking the Lead by partnering with @purina and @redroverorg to raise awareness about the #PurpleLeashProject – a project that is dedicated to creating safe places for people and their pets to escape abuse together. (AD) Please join me in shedding more light on this issue, and providing places where people and their animals can heal together. Visit www.purpleleashproject.com to learn more and find out how you can take the lead and contribute.
