Demi Lovato is using her platform for more than just singing.

The star, 28, released a new song on Wednesday called “Commander In Chief,” which calls out President Trump’s response to COVID-19, racial injustice, and more. She created the song with production help from Finneas.

“People are dying while you line your pockets deep,” Lovato sings, calling out the over 200,000 Americans who have died from COVID-19 and the victims of police brutality. She also sings about taking a knee to protest police brutality: “We were taught when we were young, If we fight for what’s right there won’t be justice for just some / We won’t give up, stand our ground / We’ll be in the streets while you’re bunkering down / Loud and proud, best believe we’ll still take a knee, while you’re Commander in Chief.”

“There’s been so many times that I’ve wanted to write the President a letter or sit down with him and ask him these questions,” she told CNN. “And then I thought, I don’t really actually want to do that and I thought one way that I could do that is writing a song and releasing it for the whole world to hear and then he has to answer those questions to everyone and not just me.” She asks the President in her song, “How does it feel to still be able to breathe?”

As Lovato explained in an Instagram Story, “Music is art. Art is expression meant to create conversation. We are heading into the most important election of our lives.” She continued, writing that the track isn’t intended to create division, rather, “This is about finding answers from our sitting president. So please debate, and talk about voting.”

Lovato is expected to perform “Commander In Chief” when she performs at tonight’s Billboard Music Awards. She also stated on Instagram that a music video for the song would be coming tomorrow.

Lovato does amazing work with the mental health community, and her advocating for her fans to vote is also an important message. Listen to her new song “Commander In Chief” on your streaming platform of choice now. We also can’t wait to hear her perform this song live.
