On October 14, Lizzo attended the 2020 Billboard Music Awards, having received 11 nominations. She rocked a black dress with the word “VOTE” being repeatedly stamped across the dress, giving viewers a clear message to get to the polls or mail in their ballots for the upcoming 2020 election.
She used her Top Song Sales Artist acceptance speech award to deliver a message on the importance of voting and fighting for others. She made the statement commending her role models for fighting through suppression, saying, “I just wanted to say I’ve been thinking about suppression and the voices that refused to be suppressed, and I wonder would I be standing here right now if it weren’t for the big Black women who refused to have their voices be suppressed.”
Lizzo also stated what viewers at home can do to play their part in fighting suppression: “I just wanted to say right now if you are at home watching this and you are thinking about changing yourself to feel worthy, this is your sign to remain true to who you are. Lemme tell y’all something: When people try to suppress something, it’s normally because that thing holds power. They’re afraid of your power. There’s power in who you are. There’s power in your voice.”
Her final words of the speech were very inspirational, telling them, “So whether it’s through music, protest, or your right to vote, use your power, use your voice, and refuse to be suppressed.”
Viewers are inspired by this message, tweeting positive thoughts about the star’s speech.
“When people try to suppress something, it’s becuse they’re afraid of that power. They’re afraid of your power.” LIZZO.🙌
